Fascinating images from all parts of science!
Although my job is writing about science — putting it into words — there are times when images can say so much more than words. I am not much of a photographer or graphic artist, so most of these images were provided by other people, who are credited in the captions when I can remember who they were.
Grigory Perelman used "Ricci flow" to prove the Poincare Conjecture, the most famous unsolved problem in topology. Science Magazine named it the "Breakthrough of the Year" in 2006. For the cover article that I wrote, Cameron Slayden produced this beautiful figure, in which the dumbbell shape at top gradually rounds itself to a sphere through Ricci flow.
